About Maca root:

#1- Maca Question:

Is maca related to a potato or is it a nightshade?

I heard maca is related to potato, so I wonder if it is a nightshade? I have to avoid nightshades/ solanine. I want to use maca right away if it is safe for me!

#1- Maca Magic Answer:
Maca is NOT RELATED to potatoes in anyway... Anybody who claims so is more than just SILLY! Maca is, however, in the broccoli, radish, and watercress family. Brassica aka Cruciferacea... The botanical Names is Lepidium peruvianum. Enjoy some today!

#2- Maca Question:

#4- Maca Question:

Is maca powder available in a red color?

#4- Maca Magic Answer:
We use red, purple, as well as yellow maca roots in our processing. However, none of the maca will have a red color to the powder because only the skin is red. The insides of the roots are always white and yellow. All the raw food companies that sell organic Maca, sell this slightly toasted version, but they consider it raw. We do not. We have, over 12 years, developed a special process for creating our “Truly Raw” Maca, which is not heated at all. It takes special care and handling to do this, extra attention and therefore makes MACA MAGIC unique in the raw Maca category… (something we pioneered by the way.)

Maca Storage Issues:

#1- Maca Question:

How long will Maca powder stay fresh?

#1- Maca Magic Answer:
The maca kilos should last more than 1 year. We are fanatics about fresh maca so we like to see people use it within a couple months- but if its sealed, dark, dry, and cool, it can last a couple years.

#2- Maca Question:

Am I supposed to keep my Maca powder in the refrigerator?

#2- Maca Magic Answer:
The powder may be kept in a sealed dry container for several months without refrigeration. If you wish to keep in the refrigerator, you may do so, as it will stay fresh longer that way. Powders are typically good for up to two years.

#3- Maca Question:

Does Maca powder lose its potency?

#3- Maca Magic Answer:
Yes it will, but you can moderate it by keeping it out of light and sealed in a cool spot.

Maca Dosage Recommendations & Potency:

#1- Maca Question:

#1- Maca Magic Answer: Between 60 days and 120 days depending on the individual.

#2- Maca Question:

#2- Maca Magic Answer:

#3- Maca Question:

Am I taking the correct dosage?

Currently I am taking 1 tsp of the powdered Maca a day and then twice a day I am taking the liquid form of 40 drops each time. For some reason while on this lot of maca (my second order) I am having some of my PMT symptoms appearing again and I am not sure why this would be. Before finding your company I was on the Natures Way Standardized Maca and felt really great, had heaps of energy, absolutely no PMT, and with my first lot of your product absolutely the same results as with the pills from health shop... but this second batch I am quite tired with no energy and become weepy at things that aren't even very sad. Do you know why this would be at all? Should it be doing this?

#3- Maca Magic Answer:
Probably a food/ herbs drug/ combination issue. I have found maca mixed with certain herbs can create some increased metabolic activity, enzymatic or even a feeling of toxicity= tiredness as the liver is stimulated to processes. A good Cholagogue, such as 10 drops of Boldo extract, or enzymes and water can change all that in an hour or so. That's if it is a bile and liver issue. Poisonous food combination.

Also, I think she's taking too much, I would recommend 1/2 a spoon. And occasional HRT. Or cut back for a while. Maca has made me tired before, especially when detoxing from bad diet. I have had one herbalist getting tired form maca at first, now he gets energy. Could be many things, more water, less maca? The tiredness could be from dehydration or some sluggishness in the system, caffeine detox, etc.

#4- Maca Question:

I have read that when taking maca you should take it for a few weeks and then stop for a few days.

Could you tell me your thoughts on this issue? I am taking Maca in the liquid form w/ dropper and am getting incredible results.

#4- Maca Magic Answer:
We always like to be cautious. Certainly people do use it everyday, but without knowing your age, reasons for using it, and results, we can't comment. We always tell people to give themselves a few days off. The old rule is: one week on take one day off, two weeks on take two days off, two months on take two weeks off, two years on take two months off. Or something similar to that! It's a good rule to use everything in moderation.

#5- Maca Question:

Is there any reason I should stop taking so much maca on a daily basis?

Long story short, I was horribly depressed, made some changes, one of which was taking Maca twice a day, but I misread the label and started taking 2 Tablespoons instead of Teaspoons in the AM & again in PM (with Odwalla's B-Monster Juice). That was two weeks ago and I feel really good, like I'm firing on all cylinders for a change. Is there any reason I should stop taking so much maca on a daily basis? Are there any negative long term affects? How did 2 Tsp a day come about?

#5- Maca Magic Answer:
There is actually no USDA standard set for maca so dosage is largely an individual preference. In all the reports we have seen, higher doses of Maca are tolerated well. Some people may find this helpful, but we cannot recommend it. As a general rule we do not advocate higher doses. Everyone is different and some people may not need these amounts. You may want to revert to a lower dosage after a couple weeks and even choose a few days each month we you use none at all. Consider maca as a therapeutic food, that can be used in times of your life when you need a little boost!

#6- Maca Question:

Is it harmful to exceed the recommended 2-3 teaspoons per day of the Maca Root?

I suffer from depression and have recently had to go off my prescription anti-depressant due to resulting heart palpitations, besides, I'm always looking for alternatives to prescriptions anyway. The Maca Root helps somewhat but seems to not be as affective the longer I take it. I usually take one teaspoon three times daily. Can anyone offer any insight on this subject?

#6- Maca Magic Answer:
It's hard to recommend either way without knowing more about your particulars. Were you able to take maca together with the medications, or did you start with the maca after stopping the medications? Also, do you use caffeinated products at all? Also, How long have you been using maca? Other suppliments? All these could factor in to your individual situation.

#7- Maca Question:

Regarding comparing the dosage of a dropper of extract to a 500 mg tablet...

I haven't found any information regarding the measured dosage of maca root in your tincture. Have I missed that? I've been trying to compare a dosage of a dropper of extract to a 500 mg tablet?

#7- Maca Magic Answer:
A common question. A: 1 ml (one dropper) is equal to a 500 mg tablet or capsule.

#8- Maca Question:

Can I take maca all the time or do I need to cycle?

#8- Maca Magic Answer:
As with any herbs, or food, please cycle your use. This will depend on your age and reason for using Maca.

#9- Maca Question:

I've read that if you take maca every day on a regular basis, you should take a week off during every month of consistent use...

Usually you get these kinds of instructions when you take hormonal products, not a natural food. What do you think of that? Would that apply to the liquid extract as well as to the powder?

#9- Maca Magic Answer:
While there are not set guidelines for the use of maca one might assume the old herbal adage would apply a week on, a day off. A month on, a week off. A year on, a month off. In addition, yes, that is a good recommendation with any herb... However, *There are always exceptions to the rule*.

Which Maca Products to Choose:

#1- Maca Question:

Which product would you recommend to someone who hasn't tried the Maca Magic products before?

I am wanting to get off of caffeine and need a healthier substitute to keep alert and have energy. Should I try the powder, the alcohol free liquid, or the Express Energy? I need the lift, but don't want to get too nervous.

#1- Maca Magic Answer:
As you may guess, all the maca products work the same way as the main phytochemicals in maca are all the same. However, the answer to your questions will depend on the following: Do you make breakfast shakes at home? If so use the powders. Do you dislike the way herbs taste? If so, use the capsules or tablets. Do you like a fast pick me up and don't mind strong earthy flavors? Use the liquid extracts. Do you want a sweet supplement you can take anytime, put into any food, and one will give you a pick up in 3 minutes? If so, use the alcohol free extract! PS. To get off caffeine, I used the full strength smoothies for the best potency.

#2- Maca Question:

I am interested in your product however I'm confused as to which Maca product to take?

I am going through the menopause and I have been taking Maca 750 (medicine plant) for approximately a year. For a period of time it appeared to alleviate some of my symptoms however lately the hot flushes have returned. Can you advise me if your maca would be any different to the maca I'm taking? If so, which should I choose, the powder or the Maca Magic? I really don't wish to waste any more money on a product that is not doing what it suggests. Please excuse my sceptecism its just I'm at the point where I need a product that does what it claims. Looking forward to hearing from you.

#2- Maca Magic Answer:
The maca powders are a better value. People react differently to Maca, so there is no way to guarantee that it will work for you. The Maca HRT is a hormone-free re-supplimentation, a formulation that we sell in stores around the US. You can find it on our Maca Mart. Some Maca studies can be found on Pubmed. We are not permitted to give out too much advice.

#10- Maca Question:

Can you take the Maca Magic Express at the same time as Adrenalift or HRT?

I have been suffering from depression and have been on anti-depressants for quite awhile. Our family has manic depressiveness that runs in the family. I am now seeing it in my daughter. I also deal with cronic fatigue and since I have been taking the Express... It is like night and day. That change has been in less than a week!!! I used to use the effedrin products to help my energy level. This soooo much surpasses what that did... And the side effects are not there. I stumbled upon this at a local herb shop that I buy Yerba Matta green tea. I am sooooooooo glad I did.

#10- Maca Magic Answer:
I'm glad is helping, you know, many so called 'chemical imbalances' are actually slight endocrine related issues. Maca is one of the bests things for the endocirine system. Yes, you can mix the extracts, however, don't take too much! There is no toxicity, but maca can keep you up too late! er, it's 12:19 a.m., oregon time...

#11- Maca Question:

Can I take all 3 products, Maca Magic Express, Adrenalift, and HRT at the same time?

#11- Maca Magic Answer:
While it may be possible to use all three in conjunction-- there are no contraindications--It would not be suggested. The best combinations are Adrenalift, with Maca Magic express added as a booster. Also, a combo of Maca HRT, and Maca Magic as a booster would also be acceptable. Maca Hrt is primarily used in cases of woman's hormonal imbalance. Adrenalift in cases of adrenal fatigue or to promote energy.

Regarding Maca Powders, Capsules, or Liquids

#1- Maca Question:

Is the maca powder that comes in the bulk packing (2.2 lb) the same maca powder that is used in the 200 gram jars?

#1- Maca Magic Answer:
Yes, it is.

#2- Maca Question:

What is the ratio for the liquid vs. powder?

I just purchased the Maca Magic Express Extract and I love it!! I have been reading some of the testimonials on your website and am wondering what the ratio is for the liquid vs powder. It says on the bottle to take 40 to 60 drops 2 times a day. In the testimonials most folks were taking 2 tsps. or more of the powder. How does that equate??? What is the concentration difference?

#2- Maca Magic Answer:
60 drops is about 1 spoonfull of powder MORE OR LESS. It's hard to equate because the liquid is 98% assimilated in about 3 minutes, powders cycle through slower.

#3- Maca Question:

Is the maca powder as potent/ concentrated as the capsules?

I am about halfway through my first bottle of MACA MAGIC tablets, and it has succeeded on what I wanted it to do. I would like to take this product on a long-term basis, but would like to reduce the cost to me as much as possible. I noticed that the 2.2lb kilo bags cost only $50, which is about ten times cheaper than what 2.2lbs of the capsules would cost (assuming 50 grams of maca per bottle). My question is: Is the maca powder as potent/ concentrated as the capsules?

#3- Maca Magic Answer:
The whole powders are the most economical way to go. The tablets are more convenient for people on the move or for those who do not like to make smoothies or other type of beverage. We have some great recipes in our publications and if you would like a copy please contact us, we will send one right out. We also offer the top selling and most potent liquids on the market, these are frequently used by medical practitioners because they are easy to regulate, easy delivery, and the fact that they are 98% assimilated within 3 minutes and digested by almost anyone.

Liquids can also be taken in any type of beverage and are easy to carry a month supply in a small 2 ounce bottle. Again, the powders are the most economical. Our speciality is whole, raw, farm-fresh powders, offering the most vibrant bioactive root on the market. The dosage of the powder is about one teaspoon, which is equal to 2 tablets. The powder dosage can be doubled if you really like the zip it gives you. We also offer case discounts, which will dorp the price of your tablets, and the 200 count bulk capsules bottles are now available by calling the main office at 541-846-6222.

#4- Maca Question:

If I take Maca Magic HRT, is it necessary to take the Express tablets?

Do they have different functions?

#4- Maca Magic Answer:
No its not necessary to take them both, especially if you feel you are getting enough maca in the maca HRT dosage you are taking. However, it is perfectly ok to use more maca with the maca HRT. But That should be decided by each individual and thier health care professional.

The products do have different functions, yes... The maca HRT has important botanical phytochemicals added from other plants that help augment the discomforts of hormone imbalance, cramps, hot flashes, menopause. Maca alone can also do that, but some women find the combination in Maca HRT to be more suitable to treat this condition.

Organic Maca vs. Raw or Gelatinized

#1- Maca Question:

Why is ORGANIC maca not RAW? Why do raw food companies sell heated or toasted maca?

And why do you not use the special process for your organic Maca?

#1- Maca Magic Answer:
The difference is that any ORGANIC MACA sold by ALL companies is heated slightly with open flame or electric toasters before it goes through the machinery. Since it is heated slightly, like toasting a piece of bread it cannot be considered "truly raw". All the raw food companies that sell organic maca sell this slightly toasted version, they consider it raw. We do not. We have over 12 years developed a special process for creating our "Truly Raw" maca which is not heated at all. It takes special care and handling to do this, extra attention and therefore makes MACA MAGIC unique in the raw maca category..... which we pioneered by the way.

As to why we dont use the same process as our organic maca, the answer is the machinery is different...USDA does not permit Organic to be handled with the Non-organic. The toasted- heated maca machinery have additional attachments to them. The raw machinery is different and does not get as hot as the other machines.

#2- Maca Question:

Which variety of maca would provide optimal benefits, raw or gelatinized?

My wife and I (both 56...OUCH!)... have done considerable research on Maca, esp. gelatinized maca and believe that it would be a valuable addition to our supplement/ herb regimen. We are active, healthy and looking to balance our hormones naturally (no easy task), as well as improve overall well-being. In your estimation, which variety would be the most effective... raw or gelatinized? Also, is your maca powder irradiated to prevent pathogens/ bacteria? What dosage would provide optimal benefits?

#2- Maca Magic Answer:
We offer both raw and Gelatinized. We recommend the raw, but you can purchase our certified Organic gelatinized and "precotostada" as well. It's pasteurized. By the way, it is prohibited to irradiate Certified ORGANIC products, so we do not. And, we are also required to have chemical free fields and facilities inspected by the certifing agencies. It has been shown irradiation lowers the enzymatic and pro-biotic nutritional value of botanicals. Any company promoting irradiation is store-aging their maca for several months or years before getting it into the stores and trying to sell it long after harvest. In our case, we have our own farm and products are turned over on a monthly basis. We are distributed across the USA and air ship fresh lots from our farm every thirty days. Long term storage of our maca is not required. The nutritional value is most vital in the first 6 months. 56, Your doing great, our production manager and Shipping Manager here in Oregon are both up in their 60's and eating maca on a daily basis. Our accountant has been using it daily for four years, is 65 and looks younger everyday.

#3- Maca Question:

Does the process of gelatinization make gelatinized maca lose its benefits?

It would seem that when gelatinized maca goes through the process of gelatanization, it would lose much of the benefits of the maca- including even the enzymes, which might help digest the fiber. Does that make sense to you?

#3- Maca Magic Answer:
Gelatinization is an extrusion process that removes the starch from the root and can make it easier to digest. Heating it in this process does not seem to change the active ingredients. However, yes, it would be devoid of enzymes as in any cooked food. If you eat only raw food and want raw maca, try out raw whole powder. The Gelatinized Maca is popular because it was the form used in the first human clinical study on Maca from a university in peru that was trying to patent the process. That study is widely referenced so many people request gelatinized maca even though it is not more potent it is more referenced because of the study. The main difference being that the starch walls are broken down. Gelatinized Maca generally mixes easier into beverages because its already been heated and is powered more finley. Is it more potent? No. Its the same as the other maca whole root.

#4- Maca Question:

Is there any difference between gelatinized maca and raw maca powder?

#4- Maca Magic Answer:
The main difference is that some people who are allergic to cruciferacea species, such as maca, or who have a weak digestive system, might digest the gelatinized better or more rapidly.

#5- Maca Question:

I am confused about the difference in the maca called "whole raw" and "whole root"...

Is this the same thing? Also, the difference between the gelatinized versus raw forms of maca. Where do I find this information? Especially interested in difference in amount taken to equal the same "effect".

#5- Maca Magic Answer:
The difference in the maca called "whole raw" and "whole root"--is the same thing. All our maca is made from the whole root. Whole raw maca is the whole raw maca root that has been cleaned, dried and then ground into the raw powder.

2] The link to information regarding the differences between gelatinized and raw maca is below: http://www.macaproducts.com/gelatinized.html

#6- Maca Question:

Is the maca root your company uses in the raw or cooked form?

#6- Maca Magic Answer:
We use both raw, and lightly heated. We do not cook it. All of the certified organic line is lightly heated. This process slightly breaks down the cell fiber wall, making it easier to digest for people with digestive problems. All of our maca is grown organically. Without the use of any pesticides or chemicals. Grown in pristine conditions at 14,000 feet elevation in the Andes Mountains, it is grown in traditional ways.

#7- Maca Question:

Is the organic Maca Magic USDA certified?

#7- Maca Magic Answer:
yes, our organic Maca is USDA certified by Oregon Tilth.

#8- Maca Question:

I bought Maca Magic [non-organic, 7.1 oz] at my local Health store the other day and was wondering - Though it is not certified organic, is it grown with pesticides or herbicides, or in chemically treated soil?

#8- Maca Magic Answer:
Our non-certified maca is Semi-wild crafted at 14,000 feet elevation. The fields are rotated every year on a ten-year cycle. The semi-wild crafted fields are not watered, not fertilized and not cultivated. We broadcast seeds and let nature do the work. The are both grown without chemicals. However, the wild crafted maca grows over a ten-year cycle each year in virgin soil and we cannot certify the region. We find it makes smaller but very potent root.

Product and Brand Comparisons: Why Choose Maca Magic?

#1- Maca Question:

Where does Maca Magic stand in comparison to Nature's First "maca extreme"?

Nature's first law has a product that says it is twice the potency of other macas since they juice and sundry at low temperature... raw maca extreme they call it... can you tell me where your maca stands in this comparison?

Also with the Macafe please let me know what is lost in the roasting process in terms of polyphenols and other nutrients?

#1- Maca Magic Answer:
Yes, our raw maca is actually raw. The other extracts are put into a solution of recycled water or other solvents and spray dried under heat. It makes them more potent because it leaves behind many of the beneficial nutrients of maca and concentrates the active ingredients into a fine power. Both are excellent products. However, they are entirely different. And, you cannot extract a commercially viable JUICE from Fresh RAW Maca root! It is also not commercially viable to Sundry juiced maca Extract! Macafe is roasted at high heat, similar to a coffee bean. It gives people a boost of energy, but is diminished in vitamin content.

#2- Maca Question:

Why is your maca NOT the least expensive on the net?

I recently was doing research for a natural menapause supplement to relieve the symptons and came across Maca. There are so many websites with the same mg's as your's but lower prices. Why?

#2- Maca Magic Answer:
Yes, there are many websites selling maca and also maca magic much cheaper... If you Google for maca magic or maca magic HRT, you will find cheaper bottles of our maca magic HRT. The reason is because we are the manufacturer and we have thousands of acounts and stores and also other web sites we sell on too..... therefore we cannot sell cheaper than the suggested retail prices, although, our retailers can do so if they wish.

#3- Maca Question:

Would you say that your maca is as potent as the maca at Makareal International?

Maca Magic Ordering Questions

#1- Maca Question:

Can I order Maca Magic through the mail?

I recently bought maca magic powder at my local health food store, and after only a few days feel more energetic, and generally more alert. I noticed that your prices on your website were quite a bit lower than they are at my local merchants, so I would like to know if I can order through the mail, as I do not use credit cards. Please let let me know. I am quite surprised at the potency of your product; I felt a difference in my overall mental and physical power within a few hours of consuming 2 teaspoonfuls of maca mixed in grape juice.

#1- Maca Magic Answer:
Thanks for your note! We are glad you gave maca a try. Re prices: Usually we like to have our prices a little higher or the same as a store price. Because we do not like to compete with the stores. However, yes, we can take orders by mail, you can simply mail a check in.

Cooking Information

#1- Maca Question:

I am interested in obtaining whole raw Maca roots to use in cooking...

I am a Chef and big fan of the Maca Powder, and have felt subtle, yet substantial results from using them. I am interested in obtaining whole raw Maca roots to use in cooking. In your literature, it is indicated that the Peruvians haved used maca as a food ingredient for many years. I am fond of the flavor, and enjoy the entire Brassica family of veggies as well. Also, is this plant viable in places other than the unique high-altitude environment you grow in? I would be interested in trying to grow it where I live. Is there seed available, or can it be grown from the root or cuttings from the root?

#1- Maca Magic Answer:
We have grown it for number of years, however the roots do not fully mature as they do in the central andes. Fresh root are quite piquant, lending themselves as a spice- not much can be eaten fresh and raw as they can burn the stomach. Dried raw root are different, they can be used in soups and sauces or in baked goodies. We offer the Dried raw in bulk. But not the fresh green raw. Nowadays we prefer to grow in Peru and hope the main production stays in the native lands, therefore we do not offer seeds. We ocasionallly do research on genetic selections, both in the USA, cold european counrties, and Peru. But we do not offer the germplasm, only the raw dried slices and powders.

#4- Maca Question:

How many times can you drink MaCafe/ per day? It did not state on the jar, or the literature I received.

#4- Maca Magic Answer:
We would recommend you start out with no more than 2 tsp per day. MaCafe is a coffee substitute, so it is very bitter like coffee. Be mindful of this when adding it to water. We would suggest starting with ½ tsp per cup and taste test your drink. Add it in according to what is pleasurable to your palate.

#5- Maca Question:

How do I make my Macafe?  Do I mix it directly with water?

#5- Maca Magic Answer:
Yes, many people prepare Macafe simply by adding 1 spoonful per cup of water. They usually leave the sediment at the bottom of the cup or strain through a tea or coffee filter. We like to add cream or soy creamer when making it to make it more like a latte.

#6- Maca Question:

Is the Macafe product organic and certified? Also, is there any sugar or other ingredients mixed in?

#6- Maca Magic Answer:
No, the MaCafe is not certified organic. And no, there are no other ingredients mixed in.
